Creating sculptures of Nilad plants holds significant meaning for me as an artist, especially considering that the name of the capital city of the Philippines, Manila, is derived from it. These sculptural pieces serve as a tribute to the celebration of Manila Day while embodying the symbolism of resilience.
The Nilad plant, also known as Scyphiphora hydrophyllacea, is native to the wetlands of Manila. Its name was adopted by the city, signifying its connection and historical roots. As an artist, sculpting the Nilad plants allows me to capture the beauty and essence of this unique flora, preserving its significance for generations to come.
Symbolically, the Nilad plant represents resilience, which resonates deeply with the history and spirit of Manila. Throughout its existence, the city has faced numerous challenges, including wars, natural disasters, and other adversities. However, it has always managed to rise and rebuild itself, showcasing an unwavering spirit of resilience.
The sculptures of Nilad plants serve as a visual representation of this resilience and strength. By carefully crafting each detail, I aim to capture the delicate yet robust nature of the plant, symbolizing Manila’s ability to withstand challenges and thrive amidst adversity.
Moreover, these sculptural pieces are a tribute to the celebration of Manila Day. Manila Day commemorates the foundation of the city in 1571, marking its historical and cultural significance. By creating sculptures of Nilad plants, I aim to honor the city’s rich history and pay tribute to its vibrant past.
Through my art, I hope to inspire others to appreciate the beauty and resilience of Manila. These sculptures serve as a reminder of the city’s enduring spirit and its ability to overcome obstacles. As an artist, it is my privilege to contribute to the celebration of Manila Day and showcase the significance of the Nilad plant in this historic context.
